World Food Day

Happy World Food Day. October 16th.

I am getting a Master in Nutrition Therapy. Food is everything to me. Not just because I eat, but because I tell other people how to eat, what to eat and what not to eat.

But there are other sides to this. Because just telling people what to eat would be way too easy.

In Colorado, 1 in 6 Children go hungry on a daily basis. They do not know where their next meal will come from. And when they do eat, it is not nourishing. It is processed and lacks nutrients, has added pesticides, preservatives and genetically engineered food plants.

Our children are malnourished, and not just the 1 in 6 mentioned above, most of our children are malnourished. It is a disaster. Look around you, I bet you can not tell me about ONE family that doesn't have a kid with Asthma, Food Allergies, Eczema, Environmental Allergies, Behavioural Problems, ADD, ADHA or Autism.

If this is not a crisis, I don't know what is.

As a nutrition professional I obviously do turn to nutrition first to find a solution to a health problem. I do firmly believe though, and have seen it many times, that REAL FOOD can alleviate many problems and it should always be the first line of defense. And then prevention.

Coloradans have the chance to vote for or against mandatory GMO labeling on November 4th. Proposition 105 asks for mandatory labeling when a processed food or fresh produce is made with a crop that has been genetically engineered. This is big! This label means transparency, the right to know what we are feeding our children and for me as a nutrition professional - it means data. Data to track problems that may be associated with eating genetically engineered food stuff. What if our children are sick because of RoundUp ready soybeans? Corn that is engineered to produce its own pesticide and registered with the Environmental Protection Agency as a pesticide? What if we finally can answer the question 'Are we allergic to food or what has been done to it?'

These genetically modified crops have patents because they are genetically altered - no longer the same as nature made them - and therefor are being OWNED. GMOs are owned by companies that also sell the pesticides to go with them. Convenient, it is like one-stop-shopping. Except it is not funny, it is frustrating and sad and how many more of our children need to be sick? Isn't 1 in 68 kids being on the Autism Spectrum enough?

To go back to World Food Day. When I think about Food I also think about the Politics of it and how sad it is that not all children can grow up eating REAL FOOD and be healthy and happy developing human beings.

The opposition to Yes on 105 is spending 10 Million Dollars to defeat and deny Coloradans the Right to Know what we are eating, they are taking away our opportunity to know if GMOs can hurt us or not. With the 10 Million Dollars they could feed all the children of Colorado organic school lunches for years and years. I know that the world doesn't work like that, but shouldn't it?

Helping this campaign has taught me a lot. One of the things I learned is that behind everything that is happening, even in politics, there is a person. Every email address belongs to a person, every pamphlet was created by a person. As the volunteer coordinator I have met, talked to and hugged so many wonderful souls that are on this journey with us. There have been times I even cried talking to a person because I was so overwhelmed by their support. I am looking at you lovely lady from Hawaii.

I wonder about the people behind the 10 Million Dollars; the person who came up with the lies spread on television, the person that created the flyer that goes from door to door misleading voters into thinking GMO labeling will hurt our farmers and cost families a lot of money.
How do they sleep at night? How do they feed their children? How do they worry about hungry children? Is all that money worth selling your soul for?

Prop 105 is not asking anyone to change anything. Farmers grow what they grow, the KNOW what they grow and pass that information to the food manufacturer, which, by the way, they already do. Farmers who grow GMO and non-GMO already have a segregation system in place, it is nothing new, it is already there. Companies manufacturing food already know if their ingredients contain genetically engineered plants or not. U.S. companies already label their products sold in Europe. Why not here in the United States?

I am from Europe, my friends who are Moms over there have the right to choose what they feed their children. When I travel there with my girls, I get to choose. When I come to the U.S. I don't. My children are U.S. citizens, my second born is a native Coloradan. They have the right to know whether their food has been genetically engineered.

I could go on and on, but I want you all to remember that World Food Day should mean something.

It should make us all think about our food supply; about our broken food system that doesn't give every child access to enough

healthy food and how we can change the way we eat today so we can be healtier tomorrow.

With love, n.

Must READ! Seriously!

People, I know I can't ask you to take 1hour and 24 minutes out of your day to watch this video. Not everyone is as passionate about this as I am. BUT!!! It is important, it affects EVERYONE!
You might be sick because you are eating genetically modified food, your kid may have allergies because of genetically modified foods, your husband might have diabetes due to infections because of genetically modified foods, your baby may have been born with autism because of genetically modified foods, you may have gastrointestinal problems because of genetically modified foods or you may never became a parent because of genetically modified foods.

What I am asking you is to watch the FIRST 3 MINUTES!!!

Jeffry Smith, the author of 'Genetic Roulette' came out with a movie and posted it full length on the website to watch for FREE until September 22nd 2012!

I saw Jeffrey Smith at a Conference in Broomfield, CO in June and he is amazing! And so is Professor Huber who is also talking in the movie. Mr. Huber is probably the age of my grandfather, he is the one I saw with tears in his eyes and all chocked up when he was talking about families who can no longer have biological children and children who will always be single kids because they were conceived via expensive and new technology. And all because of pesticides, chemicals and genetically modified foods.
And Jeffrey Smith said something I will never forget (not quoting, it was something along this line): It only takes 5% to create the tipping point! Meaning for only 5% of all the consumers in this country to avoid GMO's to create the point where big corporations have losses in their sales so big that they have to change something and come up with a new plan. And he also said ' Imagine you give all that info to Moms groups! If you tell them that GMO's are making their kids sick you just stand back and watch!' Isn't that the truth??? (-;
(so Moms, don't let me hang here!)

IT IS A PROBLEM PEOPLE, WAKE UP!!!!! And it is no longer a matter of being passionate about nutrition and food, it is a situation about being healthy or not healthy, about saving what we have left from our beautiful mother earth and about giving our children the chance for a healthy future and the possibility to become parents themselves one day. It is a time like never before to change this world for the better! You can not change what has been planted in the past but you can change what will be planted in the future! No excuses!

And by the way, this also affects Europeans! Yes, it may be labeled, but do you READ the labels????
And in Switzerland where there are NO GMO's, do you ever buy food in Germany? Do you travel to France or Holland? hehe, got you! Read the labels there or you might eat it! Thank me later. Try to watch the Movie first, not sure if it shows in Europe. Let me know if you tried!

And by the way. It took me 5 minutes to explain GMO's to my 5 year old daughter. How come that grown-ups tend to look at me like I am ready for the shrink when I tell them about the problem???

And if you watched it, please leave a comment here or even better, leave one at the genetic roulette website, those guys work hard and deserve to know that people care!

GMO information sheet!

GMO = genetically modified organism
Genes of one species are put into genes of another species.

Facts:
- GMO’s were introduced into our food supply in the 90ties without the general public being informed.

- GMO’s are not tested enough for their safety (and what does it say about 'food' if it has to be tested on animals first?)

- The third generation of hamsters and mice fed GMO feed lost the ability to have babies

- Buffalo, goats and sheep died after grazing on Bt cotton plants.

- Bt is a toxin inserted into the DNA of crops so insects that feed on them die.

- 93% of human umbilical cord blood tested in Canada still contained the Bt toxins.

- Allergies, Asthma, ADD, ADHD and Autism are more common since GMO crops are circulating in our food supplies.

- Animal tests have shown that when animals are fed a GMO diet the number of stomach cells proliferate uncontrollably causing severe inflammation in the digestive tract.

- When animals are taken off a GMO diet their behavior changes into normal animal behavior and they are no longer lethargic.

- GMO crops can cross with non-GMO crops and nobody knows what comes out of it.

- GMO’s promote monoculture and use more pesticides, chemicals and water to grow.

Not all is lost. Yet.

!!!Help me in the fight to get rid of GMO’s!!!

- Buy organic and local as much as you can.

- Avoid non-organic Corn, Soy, Canola oil, Cotton Seeds and Sugar Beets as over 90% of them are genetically modified. And also in almost every processed product you take out of the shelves in grocery stores. READ INGREDIENTS; products made from above mentioned gmo crops have MANY different names.

- Fight for labeling. Join me on facebook (Holistic Family Nutrition) for updates and links to sign petitions to get GMO foods labeled. The more people know about it the better and the less power corporations and chemical companies will have. Vote with your wallet! Give your kids the future they deserve and help the environment!

LABEL's and the GMO issue!

confused about the product labeling?

free-range - all natural - organic

do you think it is all the same? no, it is not.
free-range chickens might be able to run around, BUT do they eat what a chicken is supposed to eat? or do they get a dose of growth hormones and antibiotics with their breakfast?

here you can read it from the source:
USDA website:

understanding organic labeling:

and following is something near and dear to my heart and I think one of the most important issue we need to deal with NOW!!! we only have one planet, don't let it get to waste because of some idiots with too much money and the lust of power and wanting more!

avoid GM (genetically modified/engineered) food, and the best source to find info about what to look for while shopping is definitely the http://truefoodnow.org/

here THE link to the shopping guide!
and this might be a 'shocker' for a few out there (I love them too, but will not buy them again)

"May contain GMO ingredients"
Boca, unless labeled organic
(Kraft)
Gardenburger
Morningstar Farms"
(source: true food network shopping guide)

as a general rule:
the big four to only buy organic (also read labels of processed products that might contain those ingredients) are:
corn, soy, canola oil, cotton (cottonseed oil)

With everything we buy we have a VOTE! take advantage of that, let's make sure there will be real nature and true food left for our children and grandchildren, protect the environment with buying non-GM foods!
it is up to each and everyone of us! NOW!
